WHAT IS ROSACEA?

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterised by persistent facial redness, visible blood vessels, sensitivity, and recurring flare-ups. It primarily affects the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead, and is often mistaken for general skin sensitivity or adult acne. Rosacea is a vascular condition - driven by overactive blood vessels and chronic inflammation in the skin - and it requires targeted clinical treatment to manage effectively. Professional rosacea treatment is available at Skin Ritual in Newmarket, Auckland.

Rosacea presents on a spectrum. In its early stages it may appear as a tendency to flush easily - in response to heat, exercise, alcohol, spicy food, or emotional stress. Over time, if left unmanaged, that flushing becomes more persistent, visible capillaries develop, and the skin becomes increasingly reactive and difficult to manage.

Many clients with rosacea spend years trying to manage it with products alone - gentle cleansers, barrier creams, and calming serums - without addressing the underlying vascular and inflammatory activity that drives it. Products can support rosacea management but they cannot resolve the condition on their own.

UNDERSTANDING ROSACEA

What causes rosacea?

The exact cause of rosacea is not fully understood, but it is well established that it involves a combination of vascular dysfunction, immune dysregulation, and environmental triggers. Understanding your triggers is an important part of managing the condition.

01

Vascular dysfunction

Rosacea is fundamentally a vascular condition. The blood vessels in affected skin are chronically overactive - dilating more readily and remaining dilated for longer than normal. Over time, repeatedly dilated capillaries become permanently visible.

03

Environmental and lifestyle triggers

UV exposure, heat, cold wind, alcohol, spicy food, exercise, and emotional stress are among the most common rosacea triggers. These don't cause rosacea but they can provoke flare-ups.

05

Genetics

Rosacea tends to run in families, and affect women more than men. If a close family member has rosacea, you have a higher likelihood of developing it.

02

Chronic inflammation

Rosacea involves persistent low-grade inflammation in the skin - even when there is no active flare-up visible. This inflammatory environment increases the skin's reactivity to stimuli that wouldn't affect non-rosacea skin, and makes it more prone to visible flare-ups.

04

Demodex mites

Research suggests that people with rosacea have higher-than-normal populations of Demodex folliculorum - microscopic mites that live in hair follicles. Their role in rosacea is not fully understood, but is recognised.

06

Incorrect products + treatments

Rosacea requires nuanced care - using the wrong products or undergoing the wrong treatments can significantly worsen and aggravate rosacea.

HOW IT WORKS

How we manage rosacea at Skin Ritual

The right treatment depends on the type and severity of your rosacea. A consultation allows your therapist to assess your skin properly and recommend the most appropriate approach.

Aerolase Neo Elite Laser

Aerolase is the most effective in-clinic treatment available for rosacea. The 1064nm laser targets haemoglobin in the overactive blood vessels responsible for rosacea redness and flushing - collapsing visible capillaries and reducing the inflammatory activity that drives flare-ups. It is safe for sensitive and reactive skin, produces no downtime, and delivers progressive improvement over a course of 6 sessions. For clients with visible capillaries, persistent redness, or frequent flare-ups, Aerolase is the treatment that makes the most meaningful difference.

Vitamin A Infusion Peels

The Vitamin A Infusion Peel uses a 2.5% retinaldehyde formula to support cellular renewal and strengthen the skin's barrier function - both of which are compromised in rosacea-prone skin. Unlike more aggressive peel formulas, retinaldehyde works gradually and is well tolerated by sensitive skin when introduced correctly. Used as part of a structured protocol alongside Aerolase, it supports the overall resilience and health of the skin between laser sessions.

Homecare Routine

For rosacea clients, homecare is not optional - it is as important as in-clinic treatment. The wrong products can actively aggravate rosacea: fragrance, alcohol, harsh exfoliants, and certain actives are all common culprits. The right homecare - a gentle, barrier-supporting routine with appropriate active ingredients and daily SPF - reduces triggering, supports the skin's natural defences, and extends the results of in-clinic treatment. At Skin Ritual, your therapist will assess your current routine and recommend specific products suited to rosacea-prone skin. This is a core part of every rosacea consultation.
